Liminal brings together a group of 24 paintings made while dwelling in moments of transition. The title refers to states of passage — those in-between spaces where one thing has not quite ended and another has not fully begun. Rather than aiming for a single subject or medium, the works in this exhibition emerged through a process of following ideas as they unfolded. When preparing for the show, I spoke with artist David Moore about how to approach it. His advice was simple: paint what you feel like painting, then choose the strongest works. That freedom allowed the collection for the exhibition to develop naturally. Many of the landscape paintings were begun during a trip to Sicily in October 2025 with David and seven other artists. Works such as Drift I, II and III, Ascend, Sicily Sky and the Ragusa Sky paintings grew from noticing over and over the extraordinary meeting of land, cloud and sky. Photographs captured some of the drama, but not the depth of colour or the atmosphere. Painting from observation revealed how constantly shifting light sharpens attention — colours change, forms dissolve, and the landscape feels momentarily suspended. Working outdoors en plein air with oil or with gouache demands directness. Time disappears, and light eventually shifts enough that you must stop. Sometimes in that moment paintings can feel unfinished. With time, however, these works tend to hold a freshness and honesty that is difficult to attain in the studio. In contrast, my still life paintings in oil unfold more slowly over several days, allowing for contemplation, revision and layered development. On a personal level, this exhibition also marks a transition. After returning from Europe, I decided to prioritise painting over design work and spent three months working intensively in my studio. The results move between observation and intuition. Each painting is a negotiation — looking, responding, adding, removing – in which I’m constantly analysing composition, colours, tone and temperature, searching for balance and unity. Across the exhibition, painting operates as both anchor and threshold: a means of fixing time while acknowledging its continual drift. Liminal reflects an ongoing negotiation with change — an exploration of what it means to stand at the edge of one state and sense another taking shape.
